Lydia's Relationship Dilemma
Bruce Von Stiers
What would you do if an ex showed up on your doorstep, out of the blue? That is the dilemma that one woman must deal with in the short drama film, We Were Young.
Lydia is doing her morning routine, doing yoga and making herself a healthy smoothie. Answering a knock on her front door, her former boyfriend, Mark, barges in. Asked what he's doing there, he gives a vague answer.
As Lydia tries to get Mark to reveal the real reason that he's come to visit her, old memories flood back in. Good memories, great even. But then the other memories poke their way in. As they talk, the phrase “we were young” keeps coming into the conversation.
Mark is kind of adrift, feeling trapped in a life of normalcy. But Lydia tries to get him to see that normalcy is what most single people want. A steady relationship, someone to always be with.
There is a moment near the end of the film where Lydia makes a decision about her life. Would she be happy trying to be with Mark again? Is that what he really wanted by coming to her house? Could she leave the life she has now to possibly rekindle something that they had together when “we were young”? This decision shows how Lydia has made the choice of how her life should move forward. And that she alone has control over what her life is going to be.
Patrick Cronen played Mark. He appeared in Magnum PI, Mr Mayor and Jane The Virgin along with feature films such as Hostage House and Dying For Control.
Johny Walsh played Lydia. She also wrote the screenplay for the film. She was the stand-in for Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown. Johny also appeared in Creed II, Brave The Dark and Life Of The Party.
The film was directed by Roe Moore. She has been a script supervisor for a handful of awards shows along with several short and feature films. Roe also produced several short films. And she has directed music videos, television shows and both short and feature films.
We Were Young was done through Roe Moore's production company, Pie Pie Productions. The film was produced by Johny Walsh and Meg Parker.
The cinematographer was Jennifer Gittings. She has worked as a gaffer, camera operator 2ne unit cinematographer, cinematographer and has even been a colorist for several films.
The productions designer was Nathaly Lopez. Her previous production designer credits include the films Invitation To A Murder and The Oath.
The songs used in the film were Monsters Aren't Scary and My Love, My Friend, both by Fresh Hot Waffles. There was also Oblivion by Luke Cowings.
We Were Young is a great film. It takes a situation where a relationship could possibly rekindle and shows where someone can empower themselves to move forward in the right direction.
I can relate a little to the film. I had someone from an old relationship reach out one time. And I can relate a bit to Mark, as sometimes normal is boring. But I wouldn't trade my somewhat boring life now for what I used to have. And I am sure that there are more than a few people who will watch this film will be able to relate to it as well.
We Were Young was nominated for Best Director, Best Writer and Best Cinematographer at the BMC Fest. It was also an official selection for the 2025 Indie Short Film Festival. And it is an official selection for the upcoming Pasadena Film Festival. And it will be screening at the Glass Ceiling Breakers Film Festival in June.
