The Unhinging Of Agnes

What would you do if you woke out of a fugue state of some kind and next to a dead body? Would you think that you possibly killed that person? That is what's going through the mind of the lead character in the novel Unhinged.

Kelly Fitzharris Coody is the author of Unhinged. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of the literary publication, Sick Lit Magazine. Unhinged was Kelly's first published novel. It was published by Snow Leopard Publishing.

The novel follows Agnes Mullins, the lead character, as she tries to unravel what has happened. Why did she wake up next to a dead body? Who was the young woman and did Agnes kill her?

This is sort of a mystery novel. But only sort of. The plot deals with the psychological breakdown that Agnes seems to be having as much as her trying to find out the how and why of the death of the woman. The reader gets to sense the raw emotions and the tearing away at Agnes' already fragile mental state.

As the novel progresses, the reader learns more about Agnes and the psychological problems she had before this encounter. We follow Agnes along her journey. At times she is teetering on the edge of a major psychotic break. Is she really losing it or is there something more sinister at play here? The author digs down into what can happen to a troubled mind.

A character is installed in the story, someone who can give Agnes the footing she needs to get back to a stable mental state. As romance ensues, so does the rebuilding of Agnes' psyche. But will it hold? And, if not, what are the ultimate consequences?

I wasn't real sure that I would like Unhinged. I am not very comfortable reading about mental disorders and what the results are from those. But that didn't stop me from reading the novel. What I found was a book that at times made me sympathetic of Agnes, at other times made me wonder how she could be like that. The author paints a very vivid picture of a young woman who may or may not have become insane.

More psychological drama than a mystery novel, Unhinged is definitely an interesting read. If you like a possible murder mystery mixed with a whole bunch of bruised and broken psyche, then Unhinged will be just what the doctor ordered.
