John's Faith Awakening
Bruce Von Stiers
In an alternate world, there is only one official form of Christianity allowed. If you practice a Christian faith other than that, you must register with the government. Radical Christians can be arrested and imprisoned.
That is the foundation for The Last Evangelist. It is a TV pilot from David Heavener TV.
Jon Rhodes is a cop who oversees rooting out Christian radicals. He does his job well, almost too well. But a confrontation with a radical and his family turns deadly. John has some kind of breakdown when re-visiting the scene of the tragedy.
He hears a voice that leads him to question what he's doing and seek a different path.
David Heavener plays John. Known for roles in The Clown Statue, Zombie Bride and Elvis From Outer Space, he also wrote and directed films such as Haunted Mirror. And he wrote and directed this film.
Krystn Sayre plays Kenzie, a member of John's team and his love interest. Her previous screen credits include Something's Brewing and Limited Slip.
Other actors in the film included Zach Meiser, John B. Wells, Jill Holder, Eric Gay Jr ., Rae Sunshine Lee, Kasi Shelton and Addison Grace Randolph.
John goes to his bishop to get some advice. The bishop is played by Johnny Whitaker. Although best known for his role as Jody in Family Affair and the title role in Tom Sawyer, he has appeared in well over forty television shows and films.
The cinematography was done by Jeffrey McLeid. He was the cinematographer for the two Sam Steele films and others such as Nobody In Particular and In Mysterious Ways.
The Last Evangelist has a bit of violence and fighting. It has a plot where your freedom to practice your own version of Christianity is prohibited. Only the state religion is allowed. If you have a faith other than that, you have to register with the state. And in some cases, you are labeled a terrorist and detained or, in a worse case, killed.
The Last Evangelist could have been better. I know that this was basically the pilot episode for a faith based series. But the plot could have been fleshed out more and the acting a bit more fluid.
David Heavener has his own ministry and, through that, offers up a subscription service. Through that service, you can watch The Last Evangelist online. You can find out more about the ministry and this film at https://davidheavener.tv/
