Just Saying That With The Davenports

Bruce Von Stiers

Scott Klass is an indie rock artist. Although some people know him by that name, many others know him as The Davenports. For those fans of the A & E show Intervention, you will know The Davenports song Five Steps.

Klass formed The Davenports in 2000. There have been comparisons to Weezer, Ben Folds and even Fountains of Wayne.

This year finds The Davenports with a new album. This one is titled You Could've Just Said That. According to the press release, this is the first Davenports album that has been self-recorded. Apparently Klass played the majority of the instruments and handled other elements of the production.

The album has ten songs and a play time of a bit over thirty minutes.

When Everything's Over is the first song. It is a melodic tune about taking all they can get because when it's all over, you may not have what you want.

The Annabellas of the World features members of Fountains of Wayne and They Might Be Giants. It is a song that has a light lyrical style.

I Am Lying made me think of mid ‘60's pop groups.

If You Put Me Next To Patti is about being put next to somebody you're not comfortable with in a seating arrangement.

We're Talking About You is a fun, toe tapping song that's about exactly what the title suggests.

Full-Length Mirror has a lot of nice simple guitars backing mellow vocals.

The title track, You Could've Just Said That, is an almost alt folk piece. Again, it has some nice guitar amid melodic vocals.

I'm Not Gonna Bother You is another song that made me think of mellow ‘60's pop music.

When I Tell You That I'm Sorry has some good piano and guitar. It makes excuses for things done or not done.

We Know We Want To is a slow and mellow tune with a heartbreaking message.

The music of The Davenports is mostly a mild mixture of alt styles. There is a bit of alt pop and some alt folk, along with mild rock. The songs are authentic in their lyrics. This new album, You Could've Just Said That, has themes that seem to really resonate with the artist. It is a cumulation of a decades long musical journey that has seen high notes and heartbreak. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but Klass, as The Davenports, puts forth his own perception on life.
