D's Unwanted Visitor
Bruce Von Stiers
In the last couple of years there have been a number of low budget, or no budget, horror short films made. Some go strictly for the gore factor, others for more dramatic thriller angles.
One of those dramatic thriller films is Reckoning. It features actor and budding filmmaker Daemon Lee.
D is a thug for hire. He does jobs here and there for criminal elements. He gets a call from Marcus to do a simple pick up. There is a dialog where the viewer sees D in his apartment and Marcus in his car. But upon returning home, D confronts an intruder who's sitting at his dining table.
Things go a bit awry as D learns that the intruder is there to collect a debt. But D doesn't owe anyone anything. Or so he thinks.
The film has all of the familiar trappings of a thriller film. There is a bad guy who does bad things. There is a debt owed that he's not aware of but should have been. And a shadowy figure who's there to collect that debt.
Daemon Lee is D. He co-starred in The Magpies and The Missing Millions was the screenwriter and star of several short films. Daemon was also the screenwriter and director of this film.
Matt Sproit plays Marcus. He has appeared in numerous films. He has also appeared in television shows such as Endeavour, Code 404 and Mrs. Sidhu Investigates.
Lee's scenes were done using his phone. Sproit filmed his own scene and then sent them to Lee to edit.
Reckoning had a decent plot. The acting is okay. But the production of the film needed some work. Lee's dialog while in his kitchen was somewhat hard to hear at times. The lighting could have been a bit sharper too. But, overall, the film is worth watching.
