Action and Adventure With Nike
Bruce Von Stiers
Valerie Douglas has written novels in several genres. She has written fantasy novels, romance novels, erotic novels and action-adventure novels with some romance thrown in.
One of Douglas's novels from about a dozen years ago is Nike's Wings. It is an action-adventure novel with elements of steamy romance, conspiracy and a whole bunch of violence.
To begin the novel, the reader is introduced to Callie. She is a young woman who is about to enter college. But before the start of her freshman year, Callie goes on a day trip in Central America with her father, who is an oil company executive. Her dad's boss and a State Department guy are along for the trip. Things go sideways when their convoy is attacked, and Callie is kidnapped.
Ty and Buck are government agents, working undercover. The have been given the task of finding Callie and the State Department guy. They find the camp where the two are being held captive and Ty ends up having sex with Callie. The sex scenes were steamy but not overly graphic.
Ty and Buck leave the camp but later return to rescue Callie and the other hostages. But Callie sacrificed her freedom so that the other captives could be rescued. Later, an attempt to rescue her didn't pan out and Callies was left to try to survive as a captive slave to the rebel leader who had kidnapped her.
Through time Callie was trained to be an assassin. The rebel leader and his cohorts also used and abused her. Finally, she was able to fake an assassination attempt on a rival leader and escape. Getting back was not a big problem. But then the CIA wanted to use her unique set of skills and further train her.
The training that Callie endured would have made the training given Nikita of La Femme Nikita fame, kid's stuff.
Callie had given herself a new name. That name was Nike Tallent. And now she had large, beautiful wings tattooed on her back. Nike took the name from the Greek goddess of victory.
Many assignments later, Nike is tasked with stopping an assassination attempt on a Czech leader. She stops the attempt but is later almost mortally wounded by the other assassin. Then, after healing, she is given a new assignment. She is to rescue an agent. But this agent ends up being Ty.
Later in the book, Ty heads up a special task force made up of Homeland Security, NSA and other governmental personnel. Then Nike is brought in, after already quitting the secret division of the CIA that had sent her on dangerous, sometimes suicide missions. But things don't go as everyone would have wanted. And a top-level conspiracy is ultimately exposed.
Nike's Wings was definitely an entertaining novel. It had adventure, romance, sex, conspiracies, parkour, martial arts, and guns blazing throughout. In a way, parts of the novel kind of reminded me of ‘70's and ‘80's pulp fiction action-adventure tales. Which is to say that I enjoyed reading Nike's Wings.
Nike's Wings is currently available on Amazon.
