Carly's Freelance Experiences
Bruce Von Stiers
In the world of sex workers, there seems to be very little variation. But, in some incidences, additionally to the sex angle, there are escorts who attend parties and other functions with clients. There is also a small segment of sex workers known for the “girlfriend experience”. They simulate the intimacy, affection and companionship of an actual relationship.
In the short drama film, Miss Freelance, a young woman takes elements of the girlfriend experience and adjusts them to accommodate the slightly strange needs that her clients have.
Carly is a young woman who is a call girl, of sorts. She has a set of clients who expect her to display a certain amount of affection, in addition to whatever intimacy, or just plain sex that occurs between them.
But some of those clients have strange requests. Maurice wants to take a pill that will knock him out. Then he wants Carly to take advantage of him after he passes out. Instead of doing that, she steals his watch and cash.
Then there is Greg. They have transactional sex, but he seems to be a bit more interested in Carly than just that. But she's not so inclined.
In between the scenes with Carly and her clients, you see her dealing with an internal struggle. Yes, she likes the money she gets for doing what she's doing. But at what cost to her emotionally? What is she getting out of this whole thing, except money?
Carly's client Ben seems to be in love with her. But she is brutally honest with him about what their relationship really is.
And then there is Randy, who just needs to be coddled. In her appointment with Randy, Carly lays bare what she would like from someone else.
Maddy Murphy played Carly. She starred in Killer Self-Tape and Loosen Up: The Short.
Timothy J. Cox played Ben. He has over a hundred-fifty screen credits, including comedies like Static Cling and dramas such as Good Luck To Me.
Zach Abraham played Randy. He appeared in 28 Minute Epic and Of Dionysus.
Keith Boratko played Greg. He starred in Wreck and composed music for films such as The Widow and the Witch.
Ivan Greene played Maurice. He appeared in a couple of documentary films on rock climbers.
The film was directed by Matthew Kyle Levine. He has directed several short drama films and has been the cinematographer for over twenty films. And he was the cinematographer for this film, along with Alex Scarlatos.
Miss Freelance looks at the emptiness of unrequited affection. As much as Carly pours herself into whatever a client's needs are, the attention and affection aren't reciprocated. Expect for Ben, who is far more invested in what he perceives to be their relationship than Carly. And Carly can't seem to walk away from the profession, even as the validation and appreciation she seeks from her clients probably won't ever come about.
The acting is well done, as Murphy showed the right amount of angst about her situation in her facial expressions and physicality. And Cox was excellent as the emotionally hurt and jealous Ben.
