Kickin’ It With The Go Fish Guys
Bruce Von Stiers
Jamie Statema, Jason Folkmann and Andy Selness are three musicians known as Go Fish. Over the last several years they have put out albums and DVD’s geared towards a younger Christian audience. Kids in fact. I have really enjoyed their music and so have a whole legion of kids.
Now Go Fish has a brand new album out. The title of the album is Kickin’ It Old School. The album is full of traditional hymns done in a modern way that will appeal to kids.
The first song is pure fun. It is the title track, Kickin’ It Old School. It has a funky beat with slick lyrics and is just an absolute good time. Think Carmen and Michael Smith with a definite emphasis for children.
Sweet Song of Salvation / I Love To Tell The Story brings a modern beat and styling to this traditional hymn. Great harmonies and a cool sound make this a toe-tapping hit.
There is a great orchestral sound for the intro to I’m A Soldier In The Army of the Lord. It has one of those echo / electric sound making this kind of a dance track tune.
Soft and easy rock music begins This Is My Father’s World. A little kid is heard reciting The Lord’s Prayer in front of some actual news talk about the National Day of Prayer. Then it goes right into a moderate paced rendition of the classic hymn.
Mellow pop music backs the lyrics of Blessed Assurance.
A slight Country styling can be found in Before The Throne of God Above. It made me think of Vince Gill at bit. Or possibly Rascal Flatts.
Trippy hip-hop music permeates I’ll Fly Away.
Getting into some Delta blues styling the guys groove with Shelter In A Time of Storm.
Classic Rock-n-Roll music is what the trio’s version of The Solid Rock is all about.
The album ends with a mellow and very touching rendition of The Old Rugged Cross.
I have been a fan of Go Fish for quite a while. And I know that they reach out to a lot of kids and their families with their music. In fact, I have a couple of very young friends who listen to the Go Fish albums over and over again. I can’t wait to tell Nick and Karis about this new album. They might want to add this album to their Go Fish collection which includes Party Like A Preschooler and Snazzy.
