A Family's Supernatural Experiences

Bruce Von Stiers

As I write this, it is a couple of days past Halloween. Costumes have been put away for the year, leftover candy is being divvied up and the spookiness is over. But for one family, spookiness is a way of life. That is, they have a supernatural presence in their apartment.

Ashley Roland-White and her children are the subject of the documentary It's Coming. The documentary is from Shannon Alexander and his company, Early Autumn.

The film features interviews with Ashley and her children;Javier and one of his sisters. The most interesting of those are with Javier. He's experienced something supposed supernatural many times. He essentially became friends with this so-called spirit. Whether this was a real thing or just a child's overly vivid imagination is something for the viewer to decide for themselves. Javier is the youngest child in the family. In his first interview he talks about how he tries to stay up later, because if he goes to sleep too early, he'll wake up in the middle of the night. And then he sees something in the hallway, a black thing with white eyes that is just staring at him.

The daughter says she's not told anyone outside of the family about this, because they'd think she was a crazy person. But she feels there are evil spirits in their house. Then the daughter talks about seeing the spirit. She thinks it's someone who died there and doesn't want to leave. And she tells of a dead chicken that fell out of a pile of clothes. Nobody knows how it got there.

Ashley tells about her first encounter with a spirit when she was eleven years old. It seems that she thought he looked like Kevin from the Backstreet Boys. The spirit grabbed ahold of her leg, drug her to the floor and told her his name was Max.

Ashley believes that there is some kind of portal or doorway into the spirit world in their apartment that hasn't been closed. This is an apartment that she lived in as a child and had moved back into with her children. As I mentioned earlier, Ashley had previous experiences with spirit beings. But, until this film, Ashley has kept her experiences quiet, with only friends and family members aware of them. As a professional day-trader, Ashley felt that her professionalism and her mental health might come into question by revealing her experiences.

As things progress in the film, it seems like Ashley is extremely worried about her family and doesn't quite know how to combat what's happening. She gets some help from medium Soledad Haren and there's an exorcism performed.

The film is a bit vague on some of the details of Ashley and her family. This lack of detail doesn't necessarily detract from the story being told but might have helped make this more believable for skeptics of this type of phenomena.

Through the interviews and some filming of things in the apartment, the director seems to be trying to convey a heightened sense of the supernatural. To a degree he does that, but some of the film has more of a mundane feel to it.

The recounting of sightings, sudden noises, strange smells and other unexplainable make this film very interesting. You don't need to believe in supernatural beings and things like that in order for this film to appeal to you. The drama that Ashley and her children feel almost daily with, whether the supernatural beings are real or not, is somewhat dismaying.

It's Coming will be released the first part of November 2024. It has a virtual release date of November 8 th with a street release date of November 12 th .
