Jess's Birthday Mix-up
Bruce Von Stiers
Jess shows up at Sophie's apartment for a baby's birthday party. She brings a party balloon, a piece of smash cake and a bottle of champagne for the adults. But she soon learns the party's been canceled. This is the start of a short dramedy film titled Fine.
Through their conversation, we learn about the decade ago breakup and recent reacquainting of Jess and Sophie's brother, Ben. Then we learn about a devastating life event for Sophie. That conversation has a surprising result.
Leslie Lank is Jess. She also wrote the screenplay. She starred in the short films Birthday Party and Suburban Supernova. Birthday Party was a film with the characters of Jess and Ben getting reacquainted. Which in turn, apparently was the lead up to this film.
Rosemary Brownlow plays Sophie. She had a recurring role in Ravenwolf Towers and was in episodes of Murder Book and Unusual Suspects.
The film was directed by Travis Emery Hackett. He was the still photographer on a couple of short films and did the set photography for another.
The film takes an awkward situation, and well, makes it more awkward. Even though it has a comedic element, the film seems more of a life drama than a comedy.
Fine has been submitted for possible inclusion in this year's Santa Clarita International Film Festival.
