Natalie's Abduction Thriller

Bruce Von Stiers

Statistics show that every forty seconds a child is abducted in the United States. Although those statistics are sometimes debated on their accuracy, the FBI takes them seriously. They even have a special unit, the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment (CARD) Team. Per the FBI, “ FBI CARD teams are ready to respond at a moment's notice in cases when a child is believed to have been abducted by a stranger.” The CARD teams have a high success rate but depend on rapid deployment and cooperation from local law enforcement.

Some of those abducted children never return. And some of them return as adults, having been held captive for years,or in many cases, raised as the child of the abductor. Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard are two of the most noted abducted children to return home as adults.

There is a new mystery thriller called Fathers that deals with child abduction and that child's return as an adult.

The film opens with a woman in a hospital, sedated and restrained. She has some kind of flashback, where she is in a tee shirt and shorts and running through the woods, apparently fleeing something, or someone.

Then there is a press conference. The woman is seated and a police chief is giving a statement. Natalie is home now and is safe. Apparently, she has been gone for several years but is now back with her father, Calvin. A reporter asks where Natalie has been all these years and the chief says it's an ongoing investigation.

From there the film takes the viewer back fourteen years. Natalie is a young girl, out riding her bike with a group of other kids. Some guy calls out to her and needs help with directions. She goes over to help him and he abducts her.

The man's name is Bobby, and he seems to know an awful lot about Natalie. Like the fact that she likes eggs and stuffed animals. He has a room that she's supposed to stay in. Her own room. But as Natalie freaks out and screams for her mom, Bobby lets her know that there isn't anyone around them for miles.

The film moves back and forth between Natalie as a young girl and her as a rescued adult. The adult Natalie is scared and confused. She has no memory of what happened to her and why she was taken. And she has no memory of how she ended up running through the woods, ultimately being found.

All the time that Natalie was with Bobby, he treated her like a daughter. But something isn't quite right there. Bobby is constantly talking about how he is her dad and that Calvin is evil. And that Calvin will come or send people to come and grab her back. Bobby trains her to hide if people come to their place.

Police detectives Parker and Booker are trying to piece together the timeline for Natalie's disappearance and who took her. They recruit Bridget, a psychologist, to help coax Natalie's memories out.

There is tension between Natalie and Calvin as he seems to just want to welcome her back and she's not entirely sure of him or his motives. As the tension mounts, Natalie finds sticky notes around the house, denouncing Calvin.

These scenes are mixed in with others showing Natalie at various stages growing up and as an adult. A young couple who are lost come to a tragic end and then there is a deadly confrontation between Bobby and another man.

There is a final confrontation between a few of the main characters that put some of the pieces together. But not all of them.

Kaiti Wallen plays Natalie. She has either starred or co-starred in almost thirty films. Those films include a few films I've reviewed such as Finding Nicole, Final Recovery, Beneath Us All and Ash And Bone.

Harley Wallen plays Bobby. He also wrote and directed the film. His acting credits include Realm of Shadows and Tale of Tails. He has directed over twenty films including Final Recovery and Finding Nicole.

Jerry Hayes plays Calvin. He is a veteran of over twenty films, a few of which I've reviewed such as Betrayed and Alladin 3477-1: The Jinn of Wisdom.

Emilia Wallen plays Young Natalie. This is her third IMDB credited film. The other two being A Tale of Tails and Beneath Us All.

Deon Hunt plays Detective Parker and Yancey Fuqua plays Detective Booker. They are the two police detectives trying to figure out what happened to Natalie. Hunt appeared in Case 137 and Finding Nicole. Fuqua appeared in Highland Park and co-starred in Dinner In America. Grover McCants played Parker and Booker's boss, Chief Norris. He has over a hundred screen credits, including The Laundry Room Stalker and These Damn Kids.

Leslie Mechigian plays Bridget, the psychologist. She appeared in Christmas Coupon and Final Recovery.

Kayden Bryce plays Emmy and Giovanni Arion Brown plays Fred. They are the young couple who meet a tragic end in the film. Bryce starred in the horror film Byte and co-starred in Final Recovery. Brown co-starred in Reefer Monster Madness.

Jeffrey C. Berry plays Jerome, who has a confrontation with Bobby. He has been in films such as Final Recovery and Mayberry Man.

Denise Emilia Sandulescu plays Lisa, Natalie's mother. She appeared in Eternal Code and The Devil's Left Hand.

Other actors in the film include Jason Faucher, Shawn Jones, Kris Jones and Stephanie Crawford.

Fathers was produced by Harley Wallen, Kaiti Wallen, Joseph Williamson and Jason Faucher. Williamson has over a hundred producing credits, including films such as Apex Predators 2: The Spawning, The Bouncer and The Family Business. Faucher was a producer on Big Bad CGI Monsters and House On Haunted Hill.

Deon Hunt, who I mentioned earlier, was the cinematographer with Joseph Quick as the second unit cinematographer. Quick worked as a gaffer on the sci-fi thriller Pivot.

Painted Creek Productions was the production company for the film. It is Detroit based production company run by Harley and Kaiti Wallen.

Although the story in Fathers is not based on an actual abduction, it well could have been. According to statistics, well over a thousand children are abducted each day. Of that group, quite a few are abducted by a stranger. But if that child is being told over and over again that the abductor is their real father, and her supposed father is evil, then the psychological trauma is intensified. And that trauma is what this film brings forth in a very formidable story.

Kaiti Wallen does a superb job as the angry and confused adult Natalie. Jerry Hayes is broody, yet somewhat comforting in his role as Calvin. And Harley Wallen does a great job of portraying a subtle, gentle Bobby, who can pivot to a raging maniac in an instant.

Fathers is having it's Red Carpet Premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 28th . It is slated to be available on VOD around June 2nd.
