Engaging Depression

Bruce Von Stiers

There is no shortage of films that deal with mental health issues. Films like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Silver Linings Playbook are just but two examples.

There is one film that I just watched that deals with a teenage girl's mental health issues. It is a short drama film. The title of the film is Drowning.

A teen girl seems to be suffering from depression. Her mother tries to engage her, even suggesting she get together with friends or at least go outside.

The girl confesses to her mom that she feels like she's drowning, hence the title of the film.

Amy Copsey plays the mom. She's played a wife and mother in music videos and a nurse in the film Snatched. Ana Kallas plays the daughter.

Mimi Sachoff wrote, directed and produced the film. Per a bio sketch, she is in her final year of film school and this is her first major project.

The film is short but has a lot of poignancy. The mother is struggling to help her daughter and the daughter is struggling just to survive. There is a reveal near the end of the film that helps bring things into perspective.

Drowning has been submitted to the Santa Clarita International Film Festival.
