Edson's Solitude Stories

Bruce Von Stiers

Domi Edson is a bassist who currently is an instructor and program coordinator at the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts. In 2021, Domi graduated from the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Northern Colorado and released her first album. Domi has performed with jazz notables such as Terrell Stafford, Gayelinn McKinney and Charles McPherson.

This year finds Domi with a brand-new album. The album is titled Stories From Solitude. It is an album she recorded with the trio she founded. Of course, the name of the group is the Domi Edson Trio. The album has several original compositions written by Domi and a few classics with arrangements by her.

The album has eleven songs and a play time of just over an hour. It is being self-released. The album was recorded at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver at the end of May, 2022.

Besides Domi on bass, the trio has Spencer Zweifel on piano and Bobby Wiens on drums.

Shiny Stockings is the first offering of the album. This Frank Foster song has been done by a lot of people including Count Basie, Harry James Charlie Byrd and Clark Terry. For this album's rendition of the song, the piano takes the place of horn music. It is nicely done with the bass and drums complementing the piano. The song also has a decent bass solo in the middle of the song.

Domi's New Blues is an original composition that is pretty laid back. It prominently features the bass in the first part and the piano in the second.

Then there is In Waltzed Minnie, another original composition. It is a fun piece that has a lot of toe tapping piano.

As Domi loves skiing, the song, Panoramic, is meant to have you think of top of a ski mountain with a wide view.

Killarney Glen is another original composition. It is a light, toe-tapper with great piano.

The trio does a really good job with the Arthur Swartz song, You And The Night and the Music.

The arrangement of the Billy Strayhorn song, Lush Life, is treated as pretty much a solo piece for the bass.

Crocos is an interesting song that was written by Domi. It is fun and has an almost samba styling to it.

There is a terrific rendition of the classic song When You're Smiling.

For Col Tom Blue was written for a friend's cat who had died. It is a soft and endearing song.

The album closes with the fun, fast paced Freddie Hubbard song, Up Jumped Spring.

Stories From Solitude is a straightforward jazz album. Domi Edson provides solid bass for the songs and the piano and drums greatly complement it. The arrangements for the classic songs are solid and the original compositions are nicely done.

As you read this, Stories From Solitude should be available at many music outlets and streaming services.
