Pledging A Sorority Can Be Deadly

Bruce Von Stiers

There are many films where sororities provide the backbone of the story. There are several, such as The House Bunny, that are comedies. There are a few dramas thrown in there as well. But the prevalent genre to feature sororities is horror. From films such as Sorority Row to The Initiation of Sarah, there are many horror films dealing with sororities. Among those is my all-time favorite sorority horror film, the original Black Christmas, which starred Olivia Hussey, John Saxon and Margot Kidder.

This year finds a brand-new horror film with its roots firmly planted in the world of sororities. The title of the film is Night of the Dead Sorority Babes.

So, from the title you know this film deals with a sorority. But the dead part of the title. Is this a zombie film? A vampire film? Or a slasher film? And just who are these babes mentioned in the title? And why night? Don't sororities babes die during the daylight hours?

In this film, several young women are invited to a secret sorority pledge weekend. It is so secret that they were to tell nobody about it. And when they arrive at the location, they have to surrender their cell phones. The sorority is Gamma Rho Kappa and the location of this weekend is 666 Mockingbird Lane. Most of us know that 666 is the sign of the devil. And some might remember that Mockingbird Lane is the street for the TV family The Munsters lived on. But even though this film has a few comedic moments, by no means is this a comedy.

Right away, you know there's going to problems between the young women. Some are nice, one is quiet and one is really bitchy. Who will make it through this pledge weekend to become a member of the sorority?

As we meet these sorority pledges, their personalities are made pretty apparent. Veronica is a sketch artist. Vicky thinks of herself as hot, so maybe Veronica could draw her sometime. But Megan, who stands out as the bitchy pledge, is not a fan. Then there is loud, badass Lucy. The quiet one is Blair and there is one young woman with a porn star name, Bambi.

Before they start tearing into each other, they are marshalled by Roxie, who seems to be in charge of them for the weekend. She makes them strip down to their panties and has them don sorority t-shirts. They will wear these shirts all weekend. Then the group is introduced to their hosts, legacy sorority sisters Kimberly and Angelica. It is these two who will ultimately decide who moves forward to become a member of the sorority.

But is there something nefarious going on behind the scenes? There seem to be no other sorority girls around. And the hazing that Roxie is implementing seems a bit off too. The girls must down a bottle of grain alcohol each or be faced with cleaning the house in the nude while being paddled. A little kinky but a little strange as well.

One by one, over the next day or so, the girls are taken in to see Kimberly and Angelica for their initiation. If they make the cut, they're in the sorority. If not, they're gone. At least that is how the initiation is explained to the pledges. But in reality, the initiation is a whole lot different. And horrific. You see, Kimberly and Angelica have an ulterior motive for having the girls there for the weekend. Throughout the course of the film, that motive is revealed.

In between being called in for their initiation, there are different sub-plots going on with the girls. Veronica and Vicky seem to be getting attracted to each other. Lucy isn't taking crap from anybody, especially Roxie. Bambi is trying to get Megan to not be so bitchy. Roxie keeps hitting on Blair. And, oh, there seems to be some other girl walking around with a ruined face who has no apparent connection to this group of pledges. Or does she?

Jessa Flux played Veronica. She's been in a lot of horror films, including Deadly Dealings and Murdercise. Kelsey Livengood played Lucy. She was in Clown Motel 2 and Terror Toons 4. Ashleigh Amberlynn played Vicky. She starred in the horror short films, Deader The Better and From The Dead.

Angel Nichole Bradford played Blair. She also co-directed the film. Her previous credits include the award winning films Desperate Souls and Crackcoon. Mel Heflin played Bambi. From appearing in Plan 9 to starring in Graveyard Stories 3, she has over one hundred screen credits. Anna Clary played Megan. She starred in Mutilator 2 and The Woodmen.

Mia Katz played Roxie. She starred in the mystery Tagged and co-starred in They Came Back From Somewhere. Samantha Hupp played the mystery girl I mentioned earlier. She co-starred in Split Screen and a film I reviewed a while ago, St. Patrick's Day: The Sluagh Awakens.

Trisha Nicole Bagby, Miranda Kilpatrick and Ashley Hefner all appear at the end of the film. Bagby has appeared in several films and Kilpatrick co-starred in The Doll and Trepidity. Aside from appearing in the film, Hefner was also the cinematographer. She has been the director and cinematographer for several short films.

As for the two hosts for the weekend, Ann Myrna played Angelica and Lynn Lowry played Kimberly. As an actor, Myrna has appeared in films such as Irish Catholic and They Came From Somewhere. She also has eighteen screen credits as a producer and six as an assistant director. As for Lowry, she was one of the original Scream Queens, starring in such films as the original Crazies. She did a cameo in a horror film I reviewed, Exposure, and starred in a comedy horror short film I reviewed, Ready For My Up.

Steve Hermann was the screenwriter for the film and also co-directed it. He has well over thirty screen credits as a writer and director. Among other films, he wrote and directed The Doll. He is also an author and some of the films he's involved with are based on his books.

The Night of the Dead Sorority Babes will be an appealing film for those horror fans who like a bit of mystery and a bit of gore blended together. The mystery is in the true reason that the pledges are brought together. The gore isn't overdone but is significant enough to turn a few queasy stomachs. And there is a delicious bit of revenge and retribution that winds its way through the film as well.

The acting in the film was decent as each character had their own set of issues. And Mia Katz was delightful as the perky, yet very mean-spirited Roxie.

One thing to mention is something I touched on earlier. There is partial nudity in the film due to the scene where Roxie has the girls strip and another one that is a shower scene.

The film was produced by Hermann and Myrna's company, Acrostar Productions along with Stag Mountain Films. It is being distributed by Bayview Entertainment.

There hasn't been an official release date for The Night of the Dead Sorority Babes. The VOD and streaming platform release dates are still pending. There is also the potential for a physical media release of the film as well.
