Gabriela's Deadly Triangle

Bruce Von Stiers

Diana Cignoni is known for drama films that are a bit off kilter. Her film Blood Wolf took viewers into a relationship that took turns being passionate and abusive. With her film, Six, she brought three young people into a mixture of love triangle and psychological drama.

Cignoni has a new film that once again brings the viewer into a strange psychological world. The film is titled Deadly Blue. It is a short film that runs for a bit over eleven minutes.

Gabriela is a slightly older woman with an adult son. She seems to be overly affectionate to the son, Gabriel. But she does have this sort of boy-toy named Devon.

While Gabriel seems to want to break away from mom and her embraces, he's jealous of what she has with Devon. But what can he do about it?

Thrown into the middle of the film is a sequence at a club where Gabriela is singing. The song is Babydoll and that scene folds into one where Gabriela reveals something to her son.

Does this three-way sexual psychological drama end well? Not so much, at least for one of them.

Frances Broudie Oldridge stars as Gabriela. She co-starred in the horror film Faith and has appeared in other films such as Morris Men. Harry Gill is Gabriel. He previously starred in the sci-fi podcast series Everybody's Happy. Paddy Wailey-Hammett as Devon. He is known primarily as a poet and writer. And he is the author of the critically acclaimed Cosmopolitan City, a book of poetry and pictures about the Everton and Liverpool football clubs.

Deadly Blue, as I mentioned earlier, was produced and directed by Diana Cignoni. Harry Gill and Frances Broudie Oldridge were also producers for the film.

The music and the sound design for the film was by Pete Kneser. He did the music for Wahlburgers and episodes for shows such as Ru Paul's Drag Race. And he has worked on films with Cignoni for many years.

The cinematography was by Alex Beije. His previous work includes the short films Cull and Lost: Forever Alive. He was also the film's editor. And the makeup was done by Megan Duffy, whose previous work included being the makeup artist for the short film Vole.

This was a British cast, and the filming was done in both Barnsley and Doncaster in the U.K. The production company for the films was Ground Hero Film, which Cignoni heads up.

Deadly Blue is an unusual psychological drama that has an almost Oedipal twist to it. As with other films from Cignoni, this one has strange, stark realism that makes you wonder how these people found themselves in this particular set of circumstances.

Deadly Blue has already won a few awards at film festivals. It won Best Female Film Director at the October 2023 DMOFF festival and Best Original Director at the Casino Film Festival in Venezia, Italy. The film also received the Best International Director award at the 2024 Edinburg International Art Festival.

Deadly Blue will have an official release on February 1 st , 2024 at Firenze.
