Meekah's Mysterious Visitor

Bruce Von Stiers

Creatures of Habit is a short mystery film. It takes what seems to be a chance meeting and turns things into something quite different.

Meekah is an investigative journalist. He goes into a bar, his usual hangout. He grabs a couple of shots and sits in a booth. Then Meekah begins to sort out pictures and documents out on the booth table. What's he looking for?

Suddenly a stranger appears at the booth. Dark clothes, a moderate voice and a fedora covering the upper part of his face. Meekah can only see the man's face from his mustache down. Who is this guy? Apparently, Meekah doesn't know him.

The stranger has a theory about people and he can place them into just three categories. And he says he's able to read people.

The stranger seems to know just about everything about Meekah. And that he investigates cold cases. There is one cold case that has Meekah perplexed. He can't quite figure it out. The stranger just might know something about that as well.

And then there is a exchange between the two men that starts out interesting then ends somewhat ominous.

Theo White played Meekah. He has starred in numerous short films, including Papers For Superman and Hidden Treasure.

Timothy J. Cox played the Stranger. He has also starred in numerous short films. Those include Hard Truths, After and Sundays With Dad.

Byron Jones wrote and directed the film. His previous writing and directing credits include Revenge Tour and The Curtain Call Gang.

Creatures of Habit is quite interesting. There are many unanswered questions. What is this case that Meekah can't solve? Who is this stranger? Why does he know so much about Meekah? Is he somehow involved in Meekah's cold case? The film has a classic noir tone to it.

White is really good as Meekah. The skepticism he displays fits well with the tone of the film. And Cox is mysterious and a bit ominous without coming off as one dimensional.

Creatures of Habit almost comes off like a proof-of-concept film. You get a nibble of the cold case that Meekah is working on. And you get a sliver of the Stranger. Just enough to whet your whistle for what could very well be turned into a feature film.
