A Deadly Cabin Reconciliation

Bruce Von Stiers

Kyle and Sonya have a marriage that's on the rocks. On the advice of a marriage therapist, they rent an Airbnb cabin in the mountains to try to repair their relationship. But all may not be what it seems. That's the premise of the short horror film, Cabin.

Cabin was written and directed by Nancy O'Brien. Besides acting in a few films, Nancy has written and directed several other films, including the delightful short comedy horror film, Hairball, which I reviewed a while ago.

Even though they've agreed to be at the cabin together, Sonya is none too happy to be there. In fact, she is kind of cold and stand offish. There is a certain amount of tension between the two of them. During a walk along the shore of a lake by the cabin, it is revealed that Kyle has been cheating on Sonya.

Not only is there tension between the two of them, but something also seems to be a bit off about their stay at the cabin. It feels like someone might be watching them. Later it is revealed that somebody is spying on them.

Thrown into the mix of things is Kyle's girlfriend, Catalina. He wants to break things off, so that he can save his marriage. But Catalina really wants him and won't take no for an answer.

A harrowing incident reveals Kyle to be just the terrible husband and person that Sonya has been claiming he is.

But in the end, retribution is served hot and bloody.

The cinematography for the film was excellent. The mountain scenery and the cabin settings were crisp and filming was fluid. The cinematographer for the film was Howard Wexler. With almost two hundred screen credits, including The Macabre and the comedy horror film, Hairball, that I mentioned earlier.

William McNamara is Kyle. Having well over a hundred screen credits, he has starred in films such as Mojave Diamonds and Honeymoon In Paradise.

Marian Aguilara is Sonya. She played Silvia Castro in the internationally acclaimed series Los hombres de Paco and starred in films such as Forgive and Let Live.

Raquel Rojas is Catalina. She co-starred in the series Grachi and appeared in the series Groad and Rough Draft.

Other actors that played small, yet pivotal roles in the film were Devanny Pinn, Sarah Nicklin and Allie Perez. Pinn directed and starred in Black Mass along with starring in other horror films and appearing in several television shows. She has accumulated well over seventy screen credits. Nicklin starred in The Sins of Dracula and appeared in films such as Blood Pi and Pretty Boy. Perez co-starred in a couple of Amityville films and starred in Amor Emanuelle.

Steven J. Escobar was the film's editor. Among his many credits, he was the editor of almost four hundred episodes of the reality show Big Brother. Joe Castro was in charge of special effects. He has almost a hundred screen credits, including doing special effects for a horror feature I reviewed last year, It's A Wrap. Christina Gray was the 1st Assistant Director. She's acted in several films, been a script supervisor and was the 1st Assistant Director on the film I mentioned earlier, Hairball.

A marriage on the rocks, a girlfriend that won't let go, and a wronged wife make for good drama. The combination makes an even better horror film. Cabin is one of the best films with that combination that I've seen in quite a while. The ending was not what I had expected but I thought it was appropriate.

Cabin is currently an official selection at the Italian Horror Fantasy Festival.
