The Life and Times of Buster

Bruce Von Stiers

George Pelecanos has a vast pedigree of authoring crime fiction. From his first novel, A Firing Offence, through his latest short story collection, Owning Up, Pelecanos has gathered a huge following. And, not only known for his books, but he's also written scripts for, and helped produce the top-notch crime show, The Wire. He also wrote for the shows Bosch and Treme. Pelecanos co-created the HBO show, The Deuce.

Pelecanos has taken off in a more than a slightly different direction with his very latest offering. It is a novella with the title of Buster: A Dog. Per his author's statement on the book, it is “one dog's journey, and a look into his inner life.”

Buster is a Boxer breed of dog. We meet Buster as a puppy, living with several siblings and his mother Kiki. They all live in the apartment of Miss Darcia and her children.

The story is told through the thoughts and voice of Buster. It takes Buster from his days as a puppy with Miss Darcia's family through several owners until the sunset of his life.

A Pelecanos story wouldn't be complete without some kind of crime or criminal element involved in it. One of the people who Buster comes to live with is involved in the drug trade.

The story is both uplifting and sad. Anyone who has been a passionate dog owner won't be able to read it without a bit of heart tugging.

Buster: A Dog is being published by Akashic Books. It is available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon and the publisher, Akashic Books.
