A Complicated Job Assignment
Bruce Von Stiers
Elnora is a badass who does dirty jobs for her boss. Elnora's latest job is to take care of someone for the boss. This seems simple enough, right?
But the thing is that Elnora is only a fictional character in a story by a young woman writer. This is the premise for the short thriller film, As I Believe The World To Be.
The writer, Piper, is sitting at a table in a café, trying to flesh out the characters and plot for her story. She envisions a scene for the story, then scratches it out on the page. From there, the story moves from page to being played out on screen.
Getting ready to head into a bar, Elnora watches a couple having an argument. The guy is being a real jerk. Inside the club, Elnora almost has a steamy encounter with the woman. Then almost has a violent encounter with the guy.
Elnora also has a phone call with her boss, Jacob, who just wants her to get the job done. Which she does, but not exactly how Jacob wanted. Thrown into the mix is a shadowy woman named Eden. She, like Elnora, has a long scar on her face. Is she Elnora's friend, her confederate, her lover? I was a bit unsure of her relationship with Elnora.
Bailey Kathryn played Elnora. She co-starred in the drama Shredded and starred in the short drama film, Something Different.
Agia Smith played Gia, the woman Elnora almost had the thing with. IMDB shows that this film is her first screen credit. Donat played Corbin, Gia's boyfriend, and Elnora's target. He's appeared in films such as Viral and Scramble.
Erin Taylor played Eden. She co-starred in the mystery A Stab At The Gold and the drama The Write Place.
Timothy J. Cox played Jacob, Elnora's boss. He has been in close to two hundred films, including a few I've reviewed like Friends Forever, Static Cling and Let Dan Go. Julie Carney played Jacob's wife, Renee. She has been in over twenty films, including Friends Forever and Drunken Inheritance. Anthony Dain played Billy, another employee of Jacob's. He was in Second Draft and Reckless Mercy.
Veronica Halko played the writer, Piper. She starred in the comedy short, The Lucky Pencil, and appeared in the Haunted House of Pancakes.
Ashlee Lawhorn and Colleen O'Morrow played bartenders. Dylan Hughes played the bar's bouncer. And Shane Thompson also appeared in the film.
The film was written and directed by Spooky Spring. She directed and starred in the horror short Rabbit Season and the action-adventure short film Cold Feet.
The cinematographer was Nick Huskey. He was the cinematographer for the short thriller films Direct Message and Game Night.
The production company for the film was FinalGhoul Films.
As I Believe The World To Be is a very interesting film. Elnora is not just a badass. She is also neurodivergent, and sees some things in strange ways. The writer, Piper, seems to leave Elnora in an awkward place between wanting Gia and staying the course of her job. And there is a scene at the beginning of the film that lends itself to the added mystery at the end. It is one of those cool films that meld reality with fiction for an enticing story.
