Bruce Von Stiers
If you are into animated films like Heavy Metal, then there is a VHS tape that you have to watch. It is called AD Police Files. It was released by AnimEigo. They are the folks who have the Bubblegum Crash and Crusher Joe films.
The version of the film that I watched had vocals done in Japanese with English subtitles.
The setting this show is Neo-Tokyo a futuristic vision of Tokyo in the year 2027 AD. Androids are being used as weapons. Things are getting out of hand and so a special law enforcement unit was formed. They could move above and beyond the laws that ruled man when dealing with the outlaw androids.
The two lead characters in this saga are Leon McNichol and his partner, Jeena Malso. They do battle with these nasty androids to rid Neo-Tokyo of a mechanical menace.
There are three complete episodes of AD Police on this video. The first episode is called The Phantom Woman. This one deals with a mysterious boomer, as the wayward androids are called, and how she is reactivating dormant droids. McNichol had killed her a long time ago, or so he thought. There is a lot of gore and violence before he can stop this new menace to Neo-Tokyo.
The second episode is reminiscent of London in the late 1800’s. That city
had Jack the Ripper. Neo-Tokyo has something similar in that young prostitutes
are being taken off the boards. Not only are they being butchered, their clients
are as well. Rookie detective Ailis Kara wants to get to the bottom of the murders.
A visit to a cybernetics plant gives Ailis more than she bargained for.
If the first two episodes weren’t strange enough, the third is definitely
very weird. It is called The Man Who Bites His Tongue. It concerns a young AD
Police officer named Billy Fanword who is gunned down in a battle with some
of the boomers. His brain is put into the body of a super android and he will
now be chasing down the boomers using their own technology against them. The
only other body part that was transplanted was his tongue. Billy bites his tongue
at different times for a real sensory input. Billy is also the lover of Jeena
Malso. Billy ends up losing it and going on a rampage at police headquarters.
He and Jeena face off with no clear winner in sight.
There is a lot of
blood, bullets and bodies in AD Police Files. It is almost like they broke up
Heavy Metal, Robocop, the Rambo movies and some Alfred Hitchcock television
shows and mixed them all together for a twisted and violent animated tale.
If you like your science fiction and animated viewing to be dark and extremely violent, then AD Police Files should be on your shopping list. There is a lot of blood, gore and explicit sex scenes so this is really not a title to have running while the little kiddies are up running around.
Check your local retailer for this title. If you can’t find it, visit the AnimEigo web site and order the tape from them. Their web site is at www.animeigo.com
