9 To 5 With the 3D Jazz Trio
Bruce Von Stiers
Jackie Warren, Amy Shook and Sherrie Maricle make up the group known as the 3D Jazz Trio. They have performed together for several years and have recorded a few albums. As solo artists and collectively, they have garnered a generous amount of praise and a loyal following. Warren is the trio's pianist, while Shook is on bass and Maricle is the drummer.
The end of this year finds the trio with yet another recording. It is a great mixture of original compositions and easily recognized standards. The title of this new recording is 9 to 5.
9 to 5 has nine songs and a play time of fifty-three minutes. It is being released on the DIVA Jazz label.
I Only Have Eyes For You is the first song on the album. The Harry Warren tune was composed for the Dick Powell film, Dames. It later became a hit for The Flamingos. The instrumental rendition of the song on this album is terrific with a great arrangement of it by Amy Shook.
Artists from Dizzy Gillespie to David Sanborn have recorded Tin Tin Deo. It is nicely done here, with just the right amount of flair.
The Carpenters had a hit with the Joe Raposo song, Sing. It has been done my many other artists as well. It is nicely done on this album, with a good mix of bass and piano.
There aren't too many people who don't know the Dolly Parton song, 9 to 5, and the film of the same title. The trio provides an excellent instrumental rendition of the it, the title track for the album. It has a nice arrangement by Amy Shook.
There is a beautiful piano driven rendition of the Leonard Bernstein song, Some Other Time.
There Is No Greater Love was penned by Isham Jones almost ninety years ago. Artist from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis to Stan Getz have recorded the song. The trio do a nice, upbeat, toe-tapping rendition of the song with some fun piano playing.
Lagrimas Negras is a song that was written in the Cuban Bolero-son style. Originally recorded by Trio Matamoros in 1931, many other artists have recorded it since then. Listening to the rendition of the song on this album, I couldn't help but bop my head and tap my toes to the great sound.
Blues for G-C is an original composition from Amy Shook. It has a lot of great piano and bass, although there is a quite a bit of good drumming in the background.
The final song on the album is Theme For B.T. It is a fun, smile effecting tune that Jackie Warren wrote in honor of her cat, B.T.
I've reviewed the 3D Jazz Trio before. I liked their music then. And I definitely like their music now. This new album has a nice cross-section of classics and modern music. Not only are the arrangements done well, but the original compositions are also excellent.
9 to 5 is available at various online retailers or at the trio's website. Their site can be found at https://3divasjazztrio.com/
